Tamales at the Santa Monica Farmer's Market

When I was in California back in December, my friends took my wife and I to one of the Santa Monica farmer's markets. Our visit to the farmer's market just so happened to be during my feeding time. Then again, it's always feeding time for me. Anyway, we saw lots of people walking around with plates of tamales and rice and beans. These tamales came from The Corn Maiden and everyone we saw said they were fantastic.

You don't have to ask me twice to try a gourmet tamale so we walked down a row of stands, past the Acadie Crepe Company stand, which looked great, past some local farm stands, past some clothing stands, straight to the back of a long line at the Corn Maiden's tamale tent.

With ten different tamales on the menu it was hard to choose, but I settled on the grilled chicken, Anaheim green chile and cilantro tamale with rice and beans and the spicy New Mexico Chile and garlic sauce. J got the pork carnitas, green chile and Mexican oregano tamale with black beans and rice and the smoky spicy tomato-chipotle sauce.

I hardly consider myself a tamale connoisseur but let me tell you these tamales were outstanding. The black beans and rice were also some of the best I've ever had. Bursting with fresh, spicy, delicious flavors, I can't wait to get back to Santa Monica to visit this tamale stand.

If you find yourself in Santa Monica, or even close by, make a trip to the farmer's market on Main Street at Ocean Park Boulevard. Save some for me.
